I STARED UP AT the canopy of the bed Mab had assigned to me. My eyes were tired but I couldn't get them to close. My mind kept wandering as I ran over the scenarios in my head.

There were too many unknown variables for what could happen next. Not including my talk with Mab that had to be done, I still didn't know where Hatter was or how to stop the sickness. All that has seemed to be accomplished was almost drowning, getting mobbed by the faeries, and now being interrogated by Mab. I was no closer to doing anything I came here to do.

"Oh, Mercury," I murmured to myself, rolling over on the bed, "where are you?"

I awoke from my slumber with a jolt, sitting up straight in the bed. If I dreamed, I didn't remember it. Except I found my legs sliding over the edge of the bed and my feet moving across the floor. I didn't know where I was going, only that I had somewhere to be.

The palace halls were stone and sparingly decorated. Whoever had created the palace had left most of the castle open to the night sky.

Night? Again? I didn't think I'd slept that long and yet time in the Underground had always been a little off. The days you were having fun could last for a week and only feel like a day. While the others, the more horrid times, dragged on for months at a time only to find out it'd only been a few minutes. I had experienced both types of moments in my time in the Underground.

I received a few curious looking from servants who were wandering the halls. The guards hardly gave me a sideways glance as I passed by and into the garden once more. For once Mab wasn't in the garden. I was thankful and didn't question my good fortune as I hurried down the stone path and passed the fountain without a second look.

My feet seemed to know where they were going as I walked into the hedge maze. I let them lead me as they will, turning one way and then the other until I thought I would never stop. When I finally arrived at my destination, I found myself in a large alcove surrounded by hedges. A wooden table with benches sat on one side of the clearing while a blanket laid spread across the ground.

Frowning, I walked over to the table, my fingers trailing over the top. Mumbled speech and laughter echoed in my ears as I reached for a memory. I had been here before but when? I didn't recognize any of the voices in my head except Hatter's. The others were familiar but I didn't know who they belonged to and yet my heart ached.

Glancing away from the table, my eyes burning with tears, I walked over to the blanket.

I stared down at it for a long moment and then tilted my head back to look up at the sky.
